Protecting operations is protecting your business
Small businesses create and rely on more data than ever. The value of business data is growing and because ransomware, disasters and system failures loom around every corner, this risk of losing data has never been higher. According to a recent study, 24% of companies said they experienced a full data disaster, with 70% of small business encountering a major data loss going out of business within a year.
Moreover, depending on industry, some businesses may be required to establish a data recovery contingency plan. For example, in accordance with 45 CFR Part 160 and Part 164, Subparts A and C—adopted to implement a provision of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) commonly known as the Security Rule—covered entities must establish and implement a data backup plan for purposes of retaining and accessing electronic protected health information (ePHI) in response to an emergency.
Ensuring continuity of business is more than just having backups
Although backups ultimately serve to protect your data from unexpected loss, when it comes to recovery, not all backups are created equal.
The delay to initiate recovery, the total amount of data to be recovered, and the time between successive backups all play heavily in determining the overall impact to business. Businesses with daily-only backups captured against larger datasets face far greater challenges when it comes time to put their plan into action, and the cost of just a few hours’ downtime, never mind days or weeks, can be devastating. When you’re down, customers cannot make purchases or access account information, employees can’t work, and production grinds to a halt. Easily quantifiable costs due to continuing overhead, unproductive wages, and lost revenue add up quickly.
What’s more, not all backup solutions are capable of protecting data in the case of malware infection or the like. Solutions lacking robust malware/ransomware detection dutifully replicate data off site, where damaged files can linger undetected for far too long to allow for recovery of earlier untouched versions.
It's not worth the risk to be unprepared
While no two businesses are the same, those without a comprehensive business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) plan in place are asking for trouble.
Proper BCDR planning and preparedness affords your business a better opportunity. Our hybrid cloud-based BCDR solutions continuously safeguard your data both onsite, and in the cloud, enabling for rapid recovery in just minutes, instead of hours or days. Whether that’s part of your critical hardware infrastructure—like a custom-configured web application server or central file storage server—or a basic front-office machine you simply can’t do without, establishing the right BCDR plan will give your business the confidence needed to weather any storm.
When you partner with Jump Point Technologies, we’ll work to design and implement a complete managed BCDR solution, taking into consideration the specific needs and budget for your business, ensuring you not only continue operating after, but successfully through, a disaster of any kind.

Backup and Disaster Recovery are Not the Same
Trying to manage your disaster recovery needs on your own may cost you
Without the help of seasoned experts, your business could experience:
- Extended downtime when things go wrong, and they will
- Permanent loss of opportunity and decreased revenue
- Additional undue expense rushing to restore operation with no viable means for rapid recovery
- Diminished customer/client satisfaction or reputational damage
- Increased insurance costs due to higher perceived risk
How much downtime could your business afford?
Understanding the Real Cost of Downtime
The cost of downtime is first determined by the total cost of each employees’ time. This includes employee wage, overhead costs directly related to employment (federal payroll taxes, unemployment benefits, disability, healthcare coverage plans, etc.), and lost revenue (missed sales opportunities, non-billable hours, etc.). This could also include losses derived as a result of an offline ecommerce site.
Next, we must consider the time to recovery. While all backup products create a copy of data, not all backups are made equal when it comes to restoring data and applications. The process of restoring backup data back to its original location includes the time to initiate a recovery (locating the persons responsible for conducting the restore operation, identifying the data to be restored, reviewing the procedure to be carried out, etc.), plus the finite time for the transfer to be completed. Cloud-only based backups will be limited by either the data egress rate at the backup provider, or the maximum achievable network download speed, whichever is less.
The study case below provides a reasonable expectation of the real cost of downtime insofar as the figures applied will vary from case-to-case differently for each business. Some businesses will find they are much more intolerant to outages due to downtime than others.
Employee Cost Basis
Calculated cost per hour of downtime
(10 x $35/hr) + $100/hr + $1000/hr =
$1450/hr
Affected Employees
The total number of employees affected by the outage
10
Average Employee Wage
The average hourly cost per employee
$35/hr
Overhead Costs
All other expenses directly related to employment
$100/hr
Lost Revenue
Average business revenue generated per hour
$1000/hr
Total Recovery Time
Calculated total time for data recovery
1 hr + 16,384 seconds =
5 hrs 33 mins
Recovery Process Time to Start
The time it takes to initiate a file or system recovery
1 hr
Recovery Payload
The total amount of data to be recovered
100 GB (102,400 MB)
Data Transfer Rate
Assumed average sustained rate of data transfer
50 Mbps
Local Recovery Time
Time required to download the data to be recovered
8 x (102,400 MB / 50 Mbps) =
16,384 seconds
Cost of Downtime
Out of operation for ~5.5 hours
$1450/hr x 5.55 hrs =
$8,047.50
Flying Blind is Risky Business
Your biggest cybersecurity risk may be not realizing the risk you face.
Long considered the exclusive domain of large enterprise only, information security is now something for which businesses of all size must account and is becoming increasingly important to deploy comprehensive protections against interruptions in operation or production, data loss or compromise, and ransom due to cyberattack.
Non-clients contacting us for help dealing with compromise due to breach reported effects including data manipulation, extortion of data, theft of data, destruction of data, and ransom of data as being some of the top consequences.
Don’t let perceived budget constraints leave your business unprepared to respond in the event of ransomware or other cyberattack. Our complete cybersecurity and backup services make protection and preparedness easy and affordable, with transparent pricing information provided up-front.
